AT FIRST SIGHT

Chapter Two

Jinx decided to catch a bite to eat at the Pit's 4th level Mess Hall before going over to her office to run the S2 (Intelligence) section. Since she had no idea when Snake-Eyes & Scarlett will be back from their date, she decided to have an early dinner before resuming her duties. Ten minutes later, she sat at a corner table for two and ate her meal: grilled lamb chops with wild & brown rice and a glass of herbal tea. For desert, she opted for a slice of blueberry pie ala mode-in this case the topping being vanilla ice cream with a marasichino cherry on top.

As she ate, Jinx wondered how Snake-Eyes & Scarlett were faring. Hopefully, they won't run into any trouble that could ruin their evening. She smiled as she remembered the last time she went on a date with Lt. Falcon. It had been going well- until Cobra decided to crash the restaurant they were diningin to abduct a prominent US government official who was also a patron at that same place. That really ruined their evening, Jinx recalled, remembering all too well her run-in with her renegade cousin Storm-Shadow and Dr. Mindbender's B.A.T.s...

Jinx broke off the memory. Dwelling on the past was never her strong suit, anyway. All the same, she hoped all went well for Snake-Eyes & Scarlett.

It was a beautiful early Spring evening, Scarlett noticed. A full moon was in the night sky as well as a panorama of stars. A cool breeze added to the comfort of the evening as she and Snake-Eyes walked down the streets of Staten Island on the way to the docks to board the Staten Island Ferry.

"Thanks for treating me out tonight, Snake-Eyes," she said softly to her companion. After her last mission, she really needed time to catch her breath and relax. Tonight's date with Snake-Eyes seemed just the ticket.

Snake-Eyes turned to look fondly at her. "My pleasure, Shana." The GI Joe Commando gestured in sign language. "I just wish I could take you out more often... I don't want you to think I was neglecting you."

"Don't worry about that, pal," Scarlett said soothingly. " I know you love me. You may not always show it, but I know how much you care." Looking at her silent fiance, Scarlett couldn't help but feel a sense of security while in his company. Snake-Eyes always made her feel safe. In the nearly five years that they've known each other, he never once took advantage of herand was always considerate of her feelings. She wished dearly she could always prove deserving of her love.

Snake-Eyes looked affectionately at her. "So, what's your pleasure this evening, Scarlett?" he asked.

"Well..." Scarlett said lightly, "I do feel in the mood for some Italian cooking this evening."

"Sure. No problem. I know this place over at Columbus Avenue. The Renaissance. It's run by Art Fonzarelli, an old pal of mine. How about a dinner beginning with Fetuccine Alfredo, followed by Osso Buco and abottle of white wine, with strawberry crepes for dessert?"

"Sounds wonderful," Scarlett grinned. "C'mon, let's get on over to the ferry. My mouth's watering already from the descriptions you've been giving me."

"You got it, kid." Snake-Eyes agreed. "By the way, Scarlett, how come you always insist on taking the ferry? We can take a cab down the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, you know."

"I know that, Snakes. But I really like taking the ferry instead. It's more...romantic."

Snake-Eyes smiled at that. At heart Scarlett was a touch conservative and romantic. He hoped that part of her NEVER changed. Fifteen minutes dater, the two Joes were at the promanade deck of theStaten Island Ferry and stood close by the guard rail as the ship made it's way down New York Harbor. A speaker on the ferry softly played Frank Sinatra tunes. After "From Here To Eternity" and "Love(Is The Tender Trap)", the tune "Strangers In the Night" played.

Snake-Eyes smiled at hearing the classic tune. "I always liked that song," he told Scarlett.

"Likewise, pal." Scarlett chuckled. "you know, that song reminds me of the day we first met. Still remember that day?"

"I don't think I'll ever forget it," Snake-Eyes acknowledged. He certainly did remember that day shortly after Hawk & Stalker recruited him for the then newly formed G.I. Joe Team...
